Such study enables students to gain insight into the thinking of people in a foreign country as they learn not only their culture, but also their language, which is the ultimate key to understanding. This kind of learning is a sensitizing experience in addition to providing students with a means of communication. Ø Brain research connections Ø Early second language acquisition Ø Benefits of early foreign language study Ø What students should know and be able to do Ø Monitoring and assessing students’ progress Ø What teachers should know and be able to do Ø National Board of Certification “Working with Diverse Learners”World language learning involves not only acquiring proficiency in the language, but also teaches how to interact within the language and the culture of the people who speak it. World language study plays a unique role in international education and in preparing the student for responsible and effective participation in a global age. Ø Assessing learning styles Ø Howard Gardner’s “Multiple Intelligences” Ø Heritage speakers in the classroom Ø Learners with special needs Ø “GIVE and TAKE” (gifted intelligence valued equally and teaching all kids effectively) Diverse Teaching Methodologies” Recently, much national attention has been given to the study of world languages. No longer is language study being viewed as a pursuit for the academically gifted, but as a necessity for all Americans. The College Board has insisted that world language study be a basic academic requirement. Through inquiry, analysis, group discussion and reflection students will gain skills in a variety of instructional strategies appropriate for both elementary and secondary teaching levels. “Creating Positive Learning Environments” The future of our children and our students rests on the ability to solve worldwide problems. Cultural sensitivity and linguistic competence open the doors to communication and to problem solving. We should be proud that we as teachers have made a commitment to the study of world language and we should encourage all students to partake of this opportunity. Ø Enriching the environment Ø Classroom management plan Ø Classroom comforts and décor Ø Increasing student motivation and developing a positive attitude toward learning Ø Creating positive connections with students Ø Student praise and recognition Ø Coaching the student and private tutoring Ø Developing rapport with parents and students Ø Teacher self-evaluation Ø Student evaluation of the program Ø Building self-confidence and teaching with respect Ø Promoting your program and World Language Advocacy “Foreign Language Games - Games - Games!” Come learn while having fun and enjoy playing games. Vitalia shares her favorite songs, chants, rhymes and games to be incorporated in any world language classroom. A variety of small group work, pairs activities, large group exercises, and classroom games will be introduced to practice the four modalities of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, as well as vocab/verb drills and culture. “Mainstream Success Strategies for ELL!”This workshop focuses on strategies for classroom instruction and effective communication that enhance maximizing the learning opportunities for both, the mainstream classroom instructor and the ELL student. Content includes: different levels of student language proficiency and impact on learning outcomes, appropriate intervention to help minimize teacher frustration while supporting student success, and how the ELL’s unique culture/heritage influences student preparation for learning in the classroom. Understanding the ELL’s priorities, experiences, and values can help improve our communication styles as well as our teaching effectiveness.
