Three Key Understandings to Personalizing Instruction:
Why, What and How
Personalizing instruction means the teacher uses research-based
planning and implements tested best practices and assessments so
that each and every student embraces and learns standards-based
curriculum. Can a teacher provide instruction to meet the many
differences and needs of each student in the class? The answer
is yes. This workshop teaches the brain science behind the
challenges in education. It delivers Best Practice and
Problem-based Learning materials with next day application
tools.
The 9 Best Practices for Successful Classroom Instruction
Researchers at many of the most prestigious universities in the
country have been busy analyzing classroom pedagogical, or
instructional, principles that stand up to the rigors of
scientific inquiry. With the gigantic impetus of the No Child
Left Behind Act, teachers are called upon to learn and to apply
these Best Practices to classroom instruction. This workshop
immerses the participants in each of the 9 Best Practices with
interactive opportunities to share “what’s working” in their
classrooms and “what can be done better” using Best Practice
tools and methods for next day application.
How to use it: Classroom Application of Brain-based
Research
The 1990’s were dubbed “The Decade of the Brain”. In those ten
years, with the assistance of immense technological advances,
scientists began to understand how humans think, learn, and
remember. While the exact workings of the brain still hold many
mysteries, this evolving research may have powerful implications
for teaching and learning. This workshop will explain these new
brain-based principles of learning and actively demonstrate ways
for teachers to utilize them in classroom settings. Teachers
interact in grade-level teams to identify and design a lesson
that works for their specific classrooms.
Problem-based Learning Across the Curriculum (PBL)
Problem-based or Project-based learning is curriculum fueled and
standards based. It asks a question or poses a problem that each
student can answer. Project-based learning asks students to
investigate issues and topics addressing real-world problems
while integrating subjects across the curriculum. In PBL the
learning method fosters abstract, intellectual tasks to explore
complex issues. This teaches how PBL can be used to support and
enhance a standards-based curriculum and align alternative and
performance assessments while addressing a wide variety of
student learning styles. Grade-level templates encourage teacher
creativity and student participation.
Classroom Strategies for Differentiated Instruction &
Formative Assessment
Standards-based instruction and differentiated learning must
become an educational philosophy which recognizes the academic
diversity in contemporary classrooms. Differentiation can show
us how to reach the same standard with a wide range of learners.
Standards require a wide range of assessment tools to capture a
fuller picture of what students know and are able to do. These
tools must clearly communicate proficiency to all stake
holders...teachers, parents, and the community. This hands-on
workshop teaches application of tested strategies and gives
teachers tools and templates to create Formative Assessment and
Alternative Evaluation forms.

“…No matter what task(s) they
take on, their performance is always outstanding. They are
exemplary teachers of educational leadership in all ways. They
are teachers’ teachers. The training became a "crash course" in
Educational Leadership for the 21st Century; what Linda and
Bobbi accomplished in a few days is worth at least an M.A.
degree. But, more importantly, it truly changed the course,
direction and purpose of education for an entire nation. Through
the work of these two ladies the vision and genius of American
education was beautifully communicated and made real. Their
achievement was heroic.”
