A long-time youth mentor while committed to supporting a number of youth-based community organizations, Big Brothers and Sisters is at the top of Joe's list. He is a past board member and past president of the Big Brothers and Sisters of Greater Twin Cities. Since 1991, he has raised over $3 million for the organization through his annual Joe Schmit Celebrity Golf Tournament. In 2000, Mr. Schmit was the winner of the Jim Kelly Distinguished Service Award from Big Brothers and Big Sisters and in 2001, a winner of the Odyssey Award for commitment to youth mentorship. Joe was also honored as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF) Community Leader of the Year in 2005. He is past president and board member of the Fairway Foundation and has contributed time to many other charitable organizations. Currently Joe is on the PACER Advisory Board and is a member of Minnesota Vikings Advisory Board. Joe is a story teller who has spoken to hundreds of groups weaving his humorous and inspirational stories gleaned from covering the biggest names and events in sports, to making the transition from broadcast to the board room. He speaks from the heart and leaves your audience laughing and inspired to go from good to great. Joe Schmit is currently President of Petters Media and Marketing Group. At Petters he leads a team that works on various strategic and tactical media and marketing initiatives for some of the Petters companies including Polaroid, Sun Country Airlines and uBid. He also works closely with the John T. Petters Foundation, a charity that awards scholarships to needy and deserving students across the nation. Joe was in television broadcasting for 28 years first as a sports anchor then news anchor prior to joining Petters Group Worldwide in 2006. He won thirteen Emmys Awards from the National Television Academy in his 28-year broadcasting career, 21 years at KSTP-TV (ABC) in Minneapolis-St. Paul. He was also honored with a National Headliner Award in 2001.
